This sweet, nutty and chewy Honey Sesame Mochi is inspired by the sesame brittles I’ve eaten so much in my childhood. It requires just 4 simple ingredients and comes together under 5 minutes! All you need is a microwave safe bowl, glutinous rice flour, water, honey, sesame seeds and a microwave.
If you have tried the Quick & Easy Microwave Mochi, you will be very familiar with this process. You mix everything in one bowl, cover, and then microwave in increments until the mochi cooks. See below for more details.
The Process
Mix together water (or milk), sugar, and glutinous rice flour in a bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and microwave for 1 minute. Remove the bowl from the microwave. The edges should have started setting but the center is still raw. Mix the mixture, cover and microwave at 30s intervals, mixing after each interval, until a thick and semi-transparent mixture forms. Let cool ~2-5 minutes so it becomes cool enough to handle.
Pour sesame seeds onto a plate, fully covering it. Transfer the mochi onto the plate and sprinkle more sesame seeds on top to prevent sticking. Using your hands, flatten the mochi, sprinkling more sesame seeds when needed, and cut into squares. Toss them in sesame seeds to coat the exposed sides an enjoy!

Quick & Easy Microwave Honey Sesame Mochi
Equipment
- microwave-safe bowl
- plastic wrap
Ingredients
- 100 g glutinous rice flour
- 120 g water or milk
- 80 g honey
- sesame seeds
Instructions
- Combine together glutinous rice flour, water and honey into a microwave safe bowl. Cover and microwave for 1 minute.
- Remove from the microwave and mix the mixture together. The top and edges should be partially cooked but the center and bottom will most likely be raw. Cover and microwave at 30s intervals, mixing after each interval, until a thick and semi-transparent mixture forms. The total microwave time for me is about 2.5 minutes (1 minute then three 30s intervals).
- After the last interval, mix the mixture, stretching and folding it over itself. This will help the steam to vent as well as even out the mixture. Let it cool uncovered until it is cool enough to handle ~2-5 minutes.
- Pour sesame seeds onto a plate, fully covering it. Transfer the mochi onto the plate and sprinkle more sesame seeds on top to prevent sticking. Using your hands, flatten the mochi, sprinkling more sesame seeds when needed, and cut into squares. Toss them in sesame seeds to coat the exposed sides an enjoy!
is there a way to do it without microwaving it?
Hi Brooke! Microwaving the mochi is the easiest method, but you can also make it on the stovetop. Just cook it over medium-low heat, stirring constantly until the mixture turns from white to translucent. Alternatively, you can pour the mixture into a bowl, cover it, and steam it until it is translucent.
