MìLà Frozen Beef & Chicken Dumplings Review

Mila frozen dumplings

Review

Price (★★★★☆): 3.6/5

At $32.99 for a 50-piece bag, MìLà’s frozen potstickers/dumplings cost $.65 per dumpling. While some might consider this pricey, I believe the quality of these dumplings, which are actually pretty good, justifies the pricing. The dumplings are a bit small in size compared to dumplings served at restaurants, but the balance of dumpling skin to filling is pretty generous for a frozen dumpling. If you can’t find them in stores, note that a minimum order of $99 is required for free shipping from their website.

Ease of Preparation (★★★★★): 5/5

The package provides clear instructions for steaming, boiling, or pan-frying, giving me the flexibility to choose my preferred method. I have made them in all three methods and I have to say they held up very well. That said, my favorite preparation method is pan-frying (with the addition of creating a dumpling skirt)– you just can’t beat the textual combination of a crispy bottom and juicy filling.

Flavor:

Chicken Dumplings: (★★★★★) 5/5

My expectations for frozen dumplings aren’t very high given my past experiences with many store brought brands. However, the Mìlà’s frozen chicken dumplings blew me away at first bite. And this is someone who has always brush aside chicken dumplings for pork. Mìlà’s frozen chicken dumpling filling had the perfect combination of meat to veggie and it was flavorful and well-seasoned. The dumpling skin was also chewy yet tender. I’ve tried all three cooking methods—steaming, boiling, and pan-frying—and was pleasantly surprised by how well the flavors held up, especially when boiled.

Beef Dumplings: (★★★★☆) 3.6/5
I started with MìLà’s chicken dumplings and was so impressed that I had high hopes for the beef dumplings. Unfortunately, the flavor of the beef dumplings didn’t quite measure up to the chicken for me. To make sure I wasn’t experiencing comparison bias, I tried the beef dumplings again on their own, and my opinion remained the same. Unlike the chicken dumplings, the filling of the beef dumplings appears to be just beef. It has a savory soy flavor with some sweetness that I didn’t particularly care for. It did hold up well across all three cooking methods, just like the chicken dumplings, however, I felt the chicken version maintained its juiciness and texture better. Ultimately, and this is personal preference, I prefer my dumplings to be more savory than sweet.

Summary:

Overall, MìLà’s frozen potstickers and dumplings are an excellent option for enjoying delicious dumplings at home. They are definitely more expensive than many frozen dumpling brands found in Asian super markets, but I appreciate their versatility in multiple cooking methods (steaming, boiling, pan-frying) whereas most other frozen dumpling brands are best prepared with a singular method.

Would I purchase these again? Most definitely the frozen chicken dumplings, which is the best frozen chicken dumpling I have tried! The beef one on the other hand, I would have to pass since it does not align with my flavor preferences.
