When it comes to convenience stores, Japan’s konbini are a cut above the rest. They offer a wide range of delicious and unique food items that are perfect for quick snacks or meals on the go. Here are some of my absolute favorites!
1. Fried Chicken (but specifically Famichiki)

You can’t talk about konbini food without mentioning fried chicken, and the crown jewel is definitely FamilyMart’s Famichiki. This fried chicken is incredibly flavorful and juicy and consistently good. The crispy coating is seasoned just right, and the meat is always tender. No wonder there is a cult following!
However, don’t limit yourself to just FamilyMart, the fun is trying them all! However, if you only have room for just one convenience store fried chicken during your trip, FamilyMart’s Famichicki is the one to get!
2. Fruit sandos

Fruit is fantastic in Japan– they are super sweet and juicy. When paired with a light, fluffy cream filling and soft milk bread it becomes something even more special. The sandos are light and refreshing but rich and decadent all at once! You can find a couple varieties at konbinis, and I specifically like the mixed fruit one, but they sell out quickly! So if you see one, definitely grab it! While you can find higher-quality fruit sandos at specialty shops in train stations, the ones at konbini are very good—and definitely better than most fruit sandwiches you’d find in the States.
3. Bento boxes & Onigiri

In the U.S., it’s surprisingly hard to find meals that are cheap, quick, tasty, and healthy all at once. Convenience store or gas station food is often a last resort—highly processed, lacking in nutrition, and usually disappointing (think hot dogs or sandwiches with mystery meats). That’s why it’s such a joy to experience Japan’s konbini culture. The variety of balanced, wholesome meals you can grab on the go, heat up right in the store, and even sit down to enjoy is genuinely refreshing. I actually look forward to long train rides or taking a break from exploring just to enjoy my konbini food.
4. Teas & coffees

Konbini offer a fantastic selection of teas and coffees, and I love sampling them all! The petite sizes are perfect for trying different flavors without breaking the bank. The coffees can be a bit sweet since many are served with milk and sugar, but there are some solid brands selling black coffee that is smooth and strong!
5. Gummies

Gummies are my guilty pleasure, and konbinis carry an exciting variety! The packaging are super cute, and the flavors are much more adventurous compared to what you’d find in the States. Plus, each brand has its own unique chew texture, making it fun to try new ones. It’s always exciting to pick out a new flavor and trying it!
6. Oden

Oden is one of my favorite Japanese comfort foods, and it’s so simple yet satisfying. I think my love for oden comes from my similar love for hot pot—it’s a cozy bowl of a lot of different things! You can find various fillings in hot oden at konbini, from daikon radish to fish cakes, all simmered in a flavorful broth. It makes for an excellent snack or light meal, especially on a chilly day.
7. Dessert

Japan truly excels at dessert, and the best part is that many treats aren’t overly sweet, which is exactly how I like them! Picking up a small dessert after a meal is a delightful way to cleanse my palate or treat myself. The portion sizes are usually just right—not too big but generous enough to share it with my partner, so I don’t feel guilty about indulging, and if I can’t finish it, I can toss it without feeling guilty.
