Portugal is definitely my favorite European food destination so far (though I’ll admit I haven’t been to France yet!). The food scene completely surprised me during my trip. I was blown away by the creativity, freshness, quality, and amazing fusion of flavors. With the exception of sushi (which I do NOT recommend), almost everything I tried was consistently delicious and exceeded my expectations. I had the pleasure of indulging in some truly unforgettable dishes– here are five of my must-tries, in no particular order:
1. Pastéis de Nata: Sweet Indulgence
No trip to Portugal would be complete without indulging in Pastéis de Nata, the famous Portuguese egg tarts. These delectable pastries feature a flaky, crisp, buttery crust filled with a creamy custard that is lightly caramelized on top. The contrast between the crispy pastry and the warm velvety filling is pure bliss in every bite. I savored my Pastéis de Nata with a sprinkle of cinnamon, which bring it to another level.
My favorite spot to eat Pastéis de Nata is Manteigaria! They have several locations in Lisbon.
2. Vinho Verde: A Refreshing Companion
Okay, I know this is technically a “drink,” but I had to include it because Vinho Verde is everywhere in Portugal, and it’s just so darn good and affordable! This unique Portuguese wine, also known as green wine, is slightly effervescent and incredibly refreshing. Made from young grapes, it delivers a crisp, zesty flavor that pairs perfectly with seafood and lighter dishes. One of the highlights of my culinary journey was sipping on a glass of Vinho Verde while enjoying a meal outdoors in the warm Portuguese sun. Its lightness makes it an excellent companion for a variety of dishes, especially seafood stew.
3. Bifana: The Ultimate Pork Sandwich
The bifana, a traditional Portuguese pork sandwich, may seem unassuming at first, but one bite is all it takes to wow. Made with tender, flavorful marinated pork, it’s typically served in a crusty roll. The marinade—often a delicious blend of garlic, paprika, and white wine—gives the pork a rich, savory flavor that pairs perfectly with the crunch of the bread. II love that it’s a no-frills, simple, and budget-friendly dish that’s bursting with flavor, and that you can enjoy in a casual cafe or take on the go.
4. Seafood Stew: A Taste of the Ocean
With its long coastline, Portugal is famous for its incredible seafood, and the seafood stew really showcases just how amazing their seafood dishes can be. Packed with fresh clams, mussels, shrimp, and fish, this stew is usually simmered in a fragrant broth of tomatoes, garlic, and herbs, often with rice added in. Each spoonful is a delightful medley of flavors. Plus, it’s so wholesome and comforting—honestly, this dish is perfection!
5. Tripas à Moda do Porto: A Hearty Stew
If you’re looking for something heartier, you’ve got to try Tripas à Moda do Porto, a traditional tripe stew that’s a signature dish of the city of Porto. This comforting rich stew is made with tender tripe, beans, and a blend of spices that come together to create a deeply flavorful broth. It’s usually served with rice or potatoes, making it a perfect choice for anyone wanting to experience authentic Portuguese cuisine. The dish really reflects the culinary history of the region and captures the essence of local culture.
